John Durant – Fundamentals of a Paleo Diet: Intro and Q&A – PorcFest X



This talk will focus on the practical details of eating paleo/primal. More than just a list of “allowable” foods, paleo is an approach to healthy eating that encourages self-experimentation, customization, and local decision-making. The intro will be useful for beginners, whereas the Q&A will be a platform to address more advanced topics from those who may already eat paleo/primal.

John Durant is a leader of the growing ancestral health movement and the author of The Paleo Manifesto (Random House, September 2013). Durant studied evolutionary psychology at Harvard prior to founding Paleo NYC and Barefoot Runners NYC, the largest paleo and barefoot running groups in the world. He has been featured in the New York Times, The Colbert Report, and NPR. He blogs at Hunter-Gatherer.com and tweets @JohnDurant.

John is a former president of the Harvard Libertarian Society.

    JUST REMOVING PROCESSED FOODS FROM YOUR MOUTH IS THE FIRST PATH TO YOUR HEALTH!

    Theres 2 diet i believe human were meant to eat.

    1.Paleo

    OR

    2.Vegan

    I dont care what you say about other diets, Thats the 2 diet that is meant for health.

    Just a heads up on the kidney stones thing, I gave myself some whoppers in both kidneys by eating too much almond flour, dark chocolate and drinking a lot of black tea! I avoid most nuts now (though some are lower in the oxalates that cause kidney stones than others – it's worth checking), I use coconut flour instead of almond flour (coconut is low oxalate) and put some full-fat milk in tea (the calcium binds the oxalates in the gut allowing them to be passed out of the body safely.) I still have some chocolate though but only rarely, and only the milk variety. I'd say my diet is closer to the primal blueprint now and I enjoy some cheese and whole milk in my daily diet. People who don't want to do dairy though might try using coconut milk (the carton type intended as a dairy replacement) instead of almond milk if they're worried about kidney stones – it's much lower oxalate and some brands are enriched with calcium.´╗┐

    I stopped at don't count calories, it makes you neurotic, it's stupid, blah blah. It may be boring but it's the basic formula at the centre of weight control. Once you start to understand how many calories are in various foods, it becomes second nature. A lot of people don't realise how much energy they put into their body every day vs what they actually need.´╗┐

    I'm not sure but, if anyone else trying to find out how to lose body fat fast try- Sillexer Amazing Physique Builder (do a search on google ) ? Ive heard some wonderful things about it and my partner got amazing results with it.´╗┐

    If an item is cooked, that is a sign that it may not be biochemically compatible to begin with – this especially applies to meat. Rather than following 'traditions', why not follow genetic instructions and eat raw food that requires less processing.´╗┐

    As if it was unhealthy to leave out the rest of the biochemically incompatible diet of cow milk? What – no growth hormones, casein, etc. in skim milk? This is an odd and blatantly incorrect statement. Perhaps this claim is made to push a high fat diet.     Correct if wrong, but primal man, faced with low food supplies will eat anything, with no regard as to it's food value. There is survival value in the ability to eat many things opposed to a few things, at least for some species. So to create an ideal diet, you'd want to ferret out the good from the mediocre or bad and design the diet with the needs of the individual. Perhaps there is too much generalization in these global diet approaches that are purported to fit all.´╗┐
